Buccaneers Free Agency Breakdown

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are making a lot of moves in free agency. In case you missed it, here’s a breakdown of the roster changes, since the start of free agency :

Signed

Defensive End Michael Johnson –  Five year, $43.75 million contract with 24 million guaranteed. (Formerly of the Cincinnati Bangles)

Cornerback Alterraun Verner –  Four-year, $26.5 million contract with $14 million guaranteed. (Formerly of the Tennessee Titans)

Defensive Tackle Clinton McDonald –  Four-year, $12 million contract with $4.75 million guaranteed. (Formerly of the Seattle Seahawks)

Tight End Brandon Myers – Two-year, $4 million contract with $2 million guaranteed. (Formerly of the New York Giants)

Quarterback Josh McCown – Two-year, $10 million contract with $4.75 million guaranteed. With an additional $5 million possible in incentives. (Formerly of the Chicago Bears) This signing thrills me. At best the Buccaneers have a new starting veteran quarterback, at worst they have an additional veteran presence and someone to challenge Mike Glennon. That said, all indications are that Lovie Smith sees McCown as his starter.

Tackle Anthony Collins – Five-year, $30 million contract with $15 million guaranteed. (Formerly of the Cincinnati Bengals)

Center Evan Dietrich-Smith – Four-year, $14.25 million contract with $7.25 million guaranteed. (Formerly of the Green Bay Packers)

Guard Oniel Cousins – One-year contract. Monetary terms unknown. (Formerly of the Cleveland Browns)

Linebacker Dane Fletcher – One-year, $2 million (approximately) contract with $1.2 million guaranteed. (Formerly of the New England Patriots)

Long Snapper Jeremy Cain – Terms unknown. Cain will likely be competing with Patrick Scales in the offseason, who the Buccaneers signed to a futures/off season contract in January. With this signing it seems likely that Andrew Economos, who has been the Buccaneers long snapper since 2006, will be released. (Formerly of the Chicago Bears)

Cornerback Danny Gorrer – Re-signed with Buccaneers. One-year contract. Monetary terms unknown.

Offensive Tackle Jamon Meredith  – Re-signed with Buccaneers. Two-year, $2.7 million contract with $350,000 guaranteed.

Cornerback Deveron Carr – One-year contract extension. Monetary terms unknown.

Wide Receiver Eric Page – One-year contract extension. Monetary terms unknown.

Cornerback Mike Jenkins – One-year, $1.5 million contract with additional $500,000 possible in incentives. (Formerly of the Oakland Raiders)

Wide Reciever Louis Murphy –  One-year contract extension. Monetary terms unknown. (Formerly of the New York Giants)

Fullback/Tight End Josh Baker – Terms unknown. (Formerly of the New York Jets)

Fullback Jorvorskie Lane – Terms unknown. (Formerly of the Miami Dolphins)

Safety Major Wright – One-year contract. Monetary terms unknown. (Formerly of the Chicago Bears)

Released/Signed Elsewhere

Cornerback Darrelle Revis – Word is the Buccaneers were open to a restructure of Revis’ contract but ultimately couldn’t agree to terms and chose to release him. Signed with the New England Patriots.

Linebacker Adam Hayward – Signed with the Washington Redskins.

Linebacker Dekoda Watson – Signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Tackle Donald Penn – Was replaced on the roster by Anthony Collins. Penn signed with the Oakland Raiders.

Kicker Lawrence Tynes – Tynes came to the Buccaneers lsat year from the New York Giants. He was brought in as a replacement for kicker Connor Barth who had an offseason injury but didn’t see any play time as he was one of the Buccaneers effected by the MRSA outbreak in team facilities. Barth is expected to be back for the 2014 season.

Center Ted Larsen – Signed with the Arizona Cardinals.

Fullback Erik Lorig – Signed with the New Orleans Saints.

Wide Receiver Tiquan Underwood – Signed with the Carolina Panthers.

Center Jeremy Zuttah – Traded to the Baltimore Ravens for an undisclosed draft pick in 2015.  This doesn’t come as much of a shock after the signing of  Evan Dietrich-Smith who will most likely be the new starter.

Quarterback Dan Orlovsky – Signed with the Detroit Lions.

Wide Receiver Mike Williams – Traded to the Buffalo Bills for a sixth-round pick in the 2014 NFL draft. Williams has had non-stop off the field issues in his five years with the Buccaneers. The latest, an incident where he was stabbed in the thigh by his brother, seems to have been the breaking point for new head coach Lovie Smith.

What’s Next

The Buccaneers have CONFIRMED visits planned from the following players:

Cornerback Charles Tillman – Tillman has been on Tampa’s radar from the get-go but the Buccaneers have since signed a new cornerback. I would say that lessens the need for Tillman but the Buccaneers seem to remain open to the acquisition, Tillman is scheduled to visit the team on Wednesday. (Chicago Bears). *Signed with the Chicago Bears*

Tackle Anthony Collins  (Cincinnati Bengals)  *Signed with the Buccaneers*

Center Evan Dietrich-Smith  (Green Bay Packers) *Signed with the Buccaneers*

Linebacker Dane Fletcher (New England Patriots) *Signed with the Buccaneers*

Wide Receiver Ted Ginn (Carolina Panthers) *Signed with the Arizona Cardinals*

Cornerback Mike Jenkins  (Oakland Raiders) *Signed with the Buccaneers*

Wide receiver Louis Murphy (New York Giants) *Signed with the Buccaneers*

Cornerback Chris Owens (Miami Dolphins)  *Signed with the Kansas City Chiefs*

Seems that Lovie Smith and company have a plan and are wasting no time getting to work. Expect more pick ups soon, especially with the extra cap space releasing Darelle Revis freed up.

The majority of moves in free agency happen in the month of March, so I’m closing off this list. If there are any other big changes to the roster there will be a separate post.
