Tampa Loses on Last Second FG

A tough loss to swallow for Buccaneers’ fans, who saw the victory slip right of their fingers.  It didn’t start off so well in Tampa, as Washington went off for 21-3 lead with just 5 minutes to go before the half.  Connor Barth knocked in his second field goal just before the half to cut into the lead, and Tampa continued to score 19 unanswered points to take a late lead with under 2 minutes left.  RGIII took over with his arm and legs to bring the Skins into field goal position where Billy Cundiff nailed a 41 yard FG with just a few ticks left on the clock.

This game had shootout written all over it, but it didn’t exactly happen that way.  While a close game at 24-22, they didn’t exactly trade blows.  Actually, the Skins dominated the first half, while the Bucs dominated the second.  Unfortunately, it just wasn’t enough for Tampa, as the defense couldn’t hold off Washington in the end.

Josh Freeman actually played one of this better games of the season.  He fell just short of 300 yards, focusing mainly on his top two receivers. The Skins secondary is pretty weak, and he was able to exploit them most of the afternoon.  Vincent Jackson and Mike Williams both eclipsed 100 yards.  Freeman also showed his big play ability by throwing passes of 54 and 65 yards.  That will lead to a lot more scoring chances clearly.  The rushing attack was almost non-existent.  They fell behind early and had to rely much heavier on the pass.  Doug Martin had just 8 carries and Blount had just 6.  Neither was especially impressive, but at least Schiano decided to give Blount more touches in this game.

The Redskins offense really put up some great stats.  RGIII had 323 passing yards and added 43 on the ground.  Alfred Morris dominated on the ground with 113 yards and a score.  They totaled nearly 500 total yards and did not turnover the ball once.  This game really deserved to be much more one-sided.  If Washington could finish more drives and Billy Cundiff hadn’t missed 3 of 4 field goals, this could have looked like a blowout.  At the end of the day, Cundiff made the one that mattered most and buried the Bucs at home, dropping them to 1-3.
